Dance & Dream with Project Philippines

Volunteer dancers from the prestigious Juilliard School conducted a workshop in Mano Amiga Academy, and used the power of arts and movement to build the students' confidence, give them new avenues for self-expression, and inspire them to dream. 

Project Philippines is an idea born out of the volunteers' desire to enable more children from low-income communities to learn about visual and performing arts, through free classes, workshops and performance.

This is a whole day event consisting of Yoga, Music, Dance, Talks, and Wellness Workshops. Mano Amiga is one of the event beneficiaries this year. Hope to see you there! 

Feature Story: A school exemplifying social change

Loqal.ph recently featured our work in uplifting and transforming communities. Here’s a preview of the feature:

Mano Amiga Academy, Inc. is a non-profit school that is unique in its own way; it was established to provide education and development services to children from poor families.

Mano Amiga, which is Spanish for “helping hand,” offers 14 years of education (K-12th grade) to children of low income families. It was founded by Altius Foundation, an international non-government organization (NGO) operated by Legionaries of Christ that provide education and health and development services in over thirteen countries. It was serendipity that the group met Eleanor “Lynn” Pinugu, who helped set up Mano Amiga in 2008, holding their campus at the FTI complex in Taguig City.

The school also offers different programs particularly on health and sports. The parents are also “target audiences” as Mano Amiga also has programs on parenting and entrepreneurship.

A volunteer shares his experience of the DLSU University Tour

The article found below is a firsthand account of one of the volunteers for the activity:

During the AM session, the kids attentively listened to the remarks given by BMS officers and actively enjoyed the mini games we have prepared for them. After that, we guided the children to Yuchengco grounds and had our scrumptious lunch to keep us energized for the next part of activities. It was fun just watching the kids enjoy their meal and have small talks with them about their dreams and life ambition. Some wanted to be an astronaut, doctor, teacher, scientist and many more, which are fascinating, and heartwarming indeed.

“…It was a tiring yet fulfilling experience especially knowing that the children had a great time leaning about the University with us even just for a day. Though we only have limited time to bond with them, it was certainly the best experience because each one of us is aware that we worked hard for this event to be possible and that it turned out to be a success. We will surely miss the kids of Mano Amiga Academy. Until next time!”
